what to expect from an a&a workshop

Each workshop is 1.5 hours long and can be booked up to 2 weeks in advance. Workshops are best suited for established community groups and are fully facilitated via Zoom by Alahnna Balmeo Alvarado.

all a&a workshops are being offered at a donation-only rate (your choice!) until 9/30/2025.

  • A short welcome and introduction to aswangs & alliteration. General housekeeping, followed by a group reading of a poem or prose piece by a Filipinx author.

  • Time to get to work! Guided exercises to tap into your creative juices inspired by the featured reading.

  • Building kapwa. Time set aside for individuals to meet one another and share what they’ve written during the Exercises & Quick-writes, includes preselected questions for guided discussion.

  • 20m of solo writing (mic/cameras off), with ambient Filipino music playing in the background. Includes guided prompts to help inspire and a breakout room for those who need an extra push.

  • Discussion time: thoughts, feelings, surprises and shares from the previous 75m, followed by an invitation to join the a&a Substack.

  • Participants will leave with a strong sense of kapwa and the beginnings of a creative writing piece featuring their distinctly Filipinx voice.

The goal is for all a&a workshop participants to feel better equipped to write creatively about their experiences as part of the Filipinx diaspora.

  • All creative work shared (writings, music, etc.) will be sourced from Filipinx creatives. A list of these works will be sent out after the workshop.

Depending on # of attendees, Breakout Rooms may not be used.

All a&a workshops are being offered at a donation-only rate (your choice) until September 30, 2025.
